Authority of the Elevator Advisory Board
- appointed by the presiding officer of the commission, with the commission’s approval
- members serve until reappointed or replaced
- authorized by Health and Safety Code, Chapter 754
The Board is created to advise the commission on the adoption of appropriate standards for the installation, alteration, operation and inspection of equipment; the status of equipment used by the public in this state; sources of information relating to equipment safety; public awareness programs related to elevator safety, including programs for sellers and buyers of single-family dwellings with elevators, chairlifts, or platform lifts; and any other matter considered relevant by the commission.
The advisory board is composed of nine members appointed by the presiding officer of the commission, with the commission’s approval, as follows:
- a representative of the insurance industry or a certified elevator inspector;
- a representative of equipment constructors;
- a representative of owners or managers of a building having fewer than six stories and having equipment;
- a representative of owners or managers of a building having six stories or more and having equipment;
- a representative of independent equipment maintenance companies;
- a representative of equipment manufacturers;
- a licensed or registered engineer or architect;
- a public member; and
- a public member with a physical disability
The presiding officer of the commission, with the commission’s approval, shall appoint a presiding officer of the board to serve for two years. Board members serve for staggered three year terms with two regulated industry positions and two consumer positions expiring in each of the first, second, and third years and one consumer position expiring in the third year. Terms shall expire November 1 of the third year of the member’s term. The board shall meet at least twice each calendar year. A board member serves without compensation but is entitled to reimbursement for travel as provided for in the General Appropriations Act.
